As a professional singer Mark has worked as a principal artist with Opera Queensland and sung full time with Opera Australia. Mark has performed many times with the Qld Symphony Orchestra, the Qld Theatre Company, Qld Philharmonic Orchestra, the Brisbane Biennial and the Qld Arts Council. His most recent operatic role was as the Marriage Commissioner in Madama Butterfly.

Mark’s popular repertoire includes Beatles and Bacharach, Elvis, jazz and blues, rock and roll, country, the hits of Frank Sinatra, Tom Jones, Michael Buble and many Aussie classics.

Mark has also performed Broadway and operetta in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne including favourites Hello Dolly, Annie The Musical, Kiss Me Kate, The Student Prince, The Music Man and Die Fledermaus. He has toured throughout Queensland, Australia, S.E. Asia and the USA with various groups.

Mark’s strong, opera trained voice gives him the ability to perform acoustically, filling any church or good acoustic with ease. Without the need for amplification, Mark has the ability to sing and play guitar in a “wandering minstrel” role at functions or restaurants.

When the ambient noise level changes the acoustic, Mark has all the amplifying and electronic gear needed to fill any large venue.

Mark is also the bass singer in the award winning quartet Benchmark – Finalists in Australia’s Got Talent and Australian Gold Medal Champions of Barbershop and 6th in the World Barbershop Championships in Long Beach, California.

Newspaper Reviews:

“One could hardly imagine a singer in better or clearer form bursting into the final movement with command and clarity.”
The Courier Mail reviewing Beethoven’s 9th Symphony.

“One has to single out the spine-tingling bass of Mark Penman who, like Paul Robeson, has a voice as dark as treacle and in which deep bells ring.”
The Sydney Morning Herald on the musical “Deep Bells Ring”.

“Mention must be made of Mark Penman’s warm, rich bass and perfect diction which added an extra dimension to the role of the Major General.”
The Courier Mail on “The Pirates of Penzance”.
